Since I had no idea what twists and turns the Project might take I wanted to have the option of perhaps creating a film later.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a simple handheld camera and even my phone at times I captured\u00a0footage from meetings, interviews, rehearsals, events, and performances. I&#8217;d often setup the camera, turn it on and go about my business hoping I\u00a0remembered to turn everything on. \u00a0I once filmed an entire performance from side-stage forgetting to turn on the mic!<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately once performances began in 2014 a professional videographer came onboard and technical snafus lessened; sadly tech problems never disappear, they only seem to get more complicated!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>An Idea<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In July 2014\u00a0with videographer Richard Montague in tow, I traveled to New York City to film at several locations a few days before a performance of <em>My Brother Kissed Mark Zuckerberg\u00a0<\/em>in my hometown in upstate New York. While in the City we met-up with Clay Walker the man who took the now<a href=\"http:\/\/photos.planbproductions.com\/NYC\/1988\/ACT-UP\/pages\/ACTUP-40.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> infamous\u00a0photo of David being arrested in 1988.<\/a> \u00a0Standing \u00a0in front of \u00a0Trinity Church, where David was arrested, an idea popped into my head &#8230; construct a film around the story of the photograph<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1111\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1111\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1111 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/davidserko.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/RanchEditing-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/davidserko.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/RanchEditing-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/davidserko.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/RanchEditing-250x141.jpg 250w, http:\/\/davidserko.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/RanchEditing-150x84.jpg 150w, http:\/\/davidserko.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/RanchEditing.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My editing setup at Gunn Ranch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4><strong>In or Out?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Fast forward to September of 2016, a few weeks following my retirement: \u00a0I holed-up at a remote house in the hills overlooking the beautiful Methow Valley in Eastern WA State with the intent of figuring out if I could pull together a film from the material I&#8217;d gathered; I had to rule the film idea &#8220;in&#8221;or &#8220;out&#8221;. \u00a0 One problem, I&#8217;d never made a film before! \u00a0With no budget \u00a0I&#8217;d have to do everything myself: direct, edit, edit and mix audio, write a script, and finally narrate the thing. \u00a0Like everything else in the David Serko Project adventure, if I wanted it done, I&#8217;d have to do it myself.<\/p>\n<p>With a rudimentary knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro video editing software I began assembling a visual story drawing from live performances, interviews, old family movies and so on. As I worked, I recorded an extemporaneous voice-over narration for each scene. \u00a0I later transcribed what I&#8217;d done made a few edits and later recorded the voice over narration in a professional studio. \u00a0I returned home two weeks later with about 50 minutes of a semi-coherent film&#8230; the film was <strong>&#8220;in&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Six Months later&#8230;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>By February of 2017 the film was down to 38 minutes complete with a music soundtrack, including the song &#8220;Dance of Love&#8221; written about David by Ron Cadmus (another Project discovery) with a terrific vocal track by Broadway performer Michael Demby-Cain. \u00a0With the able assistance of my pal Eric Perlman we mixed-down the audio tracks and color corrected the entire film, it was finished February 13, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How The Film Came About From the outset of the Project I filmed as much as possible.
